Episode #37: It’s Okay Not to be Okay | Making Mental Health Mainstream Interview with Kirstin Day

IG FB Feed image.png

What’s up, Warriors! My next guest is here today to share her impactful story with us. We are discussing a topic that needs to be talked more about openly, mental health. Kirstin Day has more than 18 years of experience as a senior executive in the fashion industry in New York City.  She is a mom of two, an avid equestrian, and a lover of art and music.  Mental health has always been her passion, since struggling with an eating disorder, depression, and anxiety in her teens. In 2012, she combined her business experience and interest in helping others to form Strength is Beautiful, a platform and series of educational programs for children, teens, their parents, and industry professionals about eating disorders, mental health, and their effects with a focus on promoting health, confidence and positive self-image.

Kirstin has spoken to a wide range of audiences including speaking multiple times at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Jefferson Hospital, as a keynote speaker at the NEDAcon National Conference, and to patients and stakeholders at The Renfrew Center’s various locations. She also speaks at local organizations including The Junior League of Philadelphia, The Saturday Club, Lower Merion High School, The Agnes Irwin School, Open Connections School, Senior Leadership in the Radnor School District, and the YMCA. She has been interviewed for an article in Savvy Mainline, been a guest on the Transformational Storyteller Podcast, and was most recently a keynote speaker for the Minding Your Mind organization.  Kirstin believes that our society needs to be talking more openly about mental health and it is her mission to do just that.

Episode #36: Surviving 9/11 and Breast Cancer Why Your Mindset Matters Interview with Tracy Coyle

IG FB Feed image.png

Welcome back to this week’s episode of the Suburban Warrior podcast. Our next guest is a true survivor and in my opinion, the epitome of a Suburban Warrior! My dear friend Tracy Coyle is a survivor and warrior for many reasons.  First, she has survived being my “ride or die” for the last 24 years.  We met the very first day of school, freshman year in college, and have been friends and sisters since.  After college, like many others, she headed to NYC to fulfill her dreams.  She worked for Morgan Stanley in one of the most iconic buildings in the world, the World Trade Center.  Little did she know, just a few years into her career, she would survive something more horrific than any of us could imagine, the 9/11 attacks.

Fast forward 20 years, and she once again had to face another attack. This one was with a breast cancer diagnosis. I am beyond thrilled that my best friend in the world is here today to share her story of survival with us. Tracy is a wife, a working mom to 2 amazing daughters, and has beat cancer in the last year. I can’t wait for everyone to hear her story and how keeping a positive mindset has helped her get through it all.

Connect with her on Instagram @tracywcoyle and on Facebook @Tracy Werther Coyle. Follow me on IG @_suburban_warrior and leave a comment on what you thought of this episode. We’ll see you next week with another Suburban Warrior story.

Episode #35: Turning Trash Into Treasure Making Our World Better One Bucket at a Time Interview with Gwenn Nolan

IG FB Feed image.png

What’s up, Warriors! Welcome back to the Suburban Warrior podcast. As a mindset coach, I think about how every little action in life we do matters. How every single thing we do on this earth matters. My guest today has truly made it her mission to help make the earth a better and cleaner place for all of us. Gwenn Nolan is the founder of Mother Compost, a composting service that began operation on the Main Line of Philadelphia in 2018.

As a wife and mother of 3 children, Gwen knew how much food her family was wasting by throwing it in the trash. This never sat well with her and she felt compelled to do something about it. So in addition to her full-time job, she started Mother Compost. Through service and education, Gwenn and her team empower members of the community to make sustainable choices. Mother Compost makes composting simple for those short on time or space. Gwenn also enjoys speaking at schools & businesses to spread the word about the benefits of composting as well as teaching practical composting basics to help home composters.

You can learn more about Mother Compost by going to www.MotherCompost.com. She is also on Facebook @MotherCompost and Instagram @MotherCompost, and if you’re local to the Philadelphia area check out Mother Compost’s subscription service and start composting!

Episode #34: From CPA to Soupified Overcoming Your Fear to Follow Your Passion Interview with Michele Di Pietro

IG FB Feed image.png

Welcome back, Warriors! So, who’s hungry? Anyone? I am really excited for this episode of the Suburban Warrior Podcast because we are talking about something we all know and love...FOOD! My guest is Michele Di Pietro, an entrepreneur, chef, culinary consultant, food writer, cookbook author, blogger, and creator of Mangia With Michele. She was raised in an Italian-American family in southern New Jersey, where her culinary education began with a collection of relatives as teachers in a household where food and cooking were central, daily household activities.

Michele started her professional career as a Certified Public Accountant at a top New York City firm, but eventually found her true calling as she worked and traveled in Europe, experiencing some of the world’s finest cuisines. She left the financial world for the professional kitchen and, once fully immersed in the food industry, quickly discovered that her knowledge of numbers and CPA skills came in handy for recipe development and culinary project management.

Michele just released her first cookbook called SOUPified: Soups Inspired by Your Favorite Dishes, a whimsical and fun collection of soup recipes that were inspired by classic dishes that have been transformed into spoonable, bowl form, while still holding true to their core soul and spirit. The recipes are comfort food at its finest—hearty compilations of flavor, color, and texture, many of which are meals in and of themselves.

Episode #30: The Power of Perspective | How a Devastating Diagnosis is Fueling a Purpose-Filled Mission

IG FB Feed image.png

Welcome back to another episode of the Suburban Warrior podcast. I am so excited to have another amazing warrior sharing her story with us. Anita Meeks has spent the last 27 years as an expert in the Payment Processing Industry. She continues to work with business owners all over the country assisting them and tailoring a solution that best suits their needs with the acceptance of payments from their customers.  However, 4 ½ months ago she was unexpectedly diagnosed with Epilepsy, which has forever changed her life. After having to self-advocate for herself she has, in addition to her business, become an advocate and ambassador for the Epilepsy community. What makes Anita unique is that she is open, vulnerable, and speaks her truth as she is a patient herself. Most who speak of Epilepsy, are the caretakers and loved ones, versus those who live with it. She is passionate about speaking nationally on all that Epilepsy is and what it is not, with the hopes of minimizing the negative stigma behind Epilepsy.

Join Anita in her Fearlessly ALIVE Facebook group to be inspired by more stories of adversity and how people learned to overcome them. In this group, she gives hope to those who may feel stuck in their lives and let them know they are not alone.

Episode #23: You Can Reverse Chronic Disease with Dr. Jenn Simmons

IG FB image (9).png

A MUST LISTEN episode for each and every one of us!!! Dr. Jenn Simmons is a functional medicine physician who lives in Gladwyne, PA with her husband, Albert, and two boys, Andrew and Will.  Dr. Simmons attended Jefferson Medical College, completed a general surgery residency at Albany Medical Center, and was the inaugural fellow in breast disease in Philadelphia in 2003.  Just three years into her career, she was named TOP DOC by Philadelphia Magazine and maintained that title every year since. Dr. Simmons was one of the leaders in breast surgery and cancer care in Philadelphia for 16 years.  She performed innovative, cutting-edge surgery and successfully treated thousands of women for breast cancer.   She was frequently called on for interviews by both local and national news outlets, as a breast cancer authority.  She speaks both locally and regionally on the topic of breast health, disease prevention, and the treatment of breast cancer.

In 2017, Dr. Simmons was diagnosed with her first auto-immune disease.  It was then that she learned the importance of diet in promoting health.  Being a traditionally trained physician, she had limited training in the area of nutrition.  She learned of functional medicine during this time and began doing some training in that field.  So intoxicated by the concept of pursuing health rather than treating illness, she immersed herself in the study of functional medicine.  In late 2018, following her second auto-immune diagnosis, she knew that she needed to leave surgery, both to heal herself but to help others to truly heal as well!

In October 2019, she founded Real Health MD, a comprehensive wellness center that offers functional medicine and access to a host of other interventions that provide a roadmap to those who want to stop treating symptoms and instead know real health.  After only a few months of practice, she was put on the cover of Main Line Today as their TOP DOC in integrative medicine!

Dr. Simmons frequently speaks on her health journey, and on what she has learned in the course of healing herself.  She continues to serve her breast cancer population by helping them and others to achieve hormonal health.

When Dr. Simmons is not working, you can find her spending time with her family, at the dog park with her three dogs, perusing her local farmers market, on the tennis court, or in the kitchen with friends cooking up a storm.
